Schools house valuable items like computers, tablets, projectors, lab equipment, and musical instruments, which are prime targets for theft due to their resale value. Administrative offices may also contain sensitive data or cash, increasing the risk of targeted break-ins.

Campuses often have large, sprawling layouts with multiple entry points, such as unlocked gates, doors, or windows, making them easy targets for unauthorized access. Shared spaces like gyms, libraries, and parking lots are particularly vulnerable.

Schools are typically unoccupied at night, on weekends, or during holidays, leaving buildings, equipment, and grounds exposed to theft and vandalism with minimal immediate detection.

Internal theft or vandalism by students, staff, or contractors is a significant risk. Students may steal equipment or deface property (e.g., graffiti, broken furniture), while staff or contractors with access may collude with external criminals or steal items like electronics.

Parking lots are frequent targets for vehicle break-ins, theft of catalytic converters, or vandalism (e.g., keying, tire slashing). Poor lighting and limited surveillance in these areas increase risks.

School construction or renovation projects expose sites to theft of materials (e.g., copper wiring, tools) and vandalism (e.g., graffiti, equipment sabotage). Unsecured construction zones are frequent targets, especially during off-hours.
